A case of associated occurrence of the crab Lauridromia inter-media (Laurie, 1906) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Dromiidae) and the actinian Nemanthus annamensis Carlgren, 1943 (Anthozoa: Actiniaria: Nemanthidae) Naturalis
Lavaleye, M.S.S.; Hartog, J.C. den.
Members of the crab family Dromiidae tend to cover their carapace mostly with sponges or colonial tunicates. More rarely are used other objects or organisms such as solitary Tunicata, Zoantharia (= encrusting anemones), valves of Bivalvia, etc.; a review of these is presented. A new association of a dromiid crab Lauridromia intermedia (Laurie, 1906) and an actinian Nemanthus annamensis Carlgren, 1943, is described and discussed. Lauridromia intermedia is recorded for the first time from the continental shelf of East Africa.

A review of the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus infection in Nigeria BJID
Entonu,P.E.; Agwale,S.M..
In order to amalgamate research findings on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria as well as the trend of the infection in a concise manner, we reviewed published articles on the HIV/AIDS situation in Nigeria. We categorized this review into several subheadings. The HIV prevalence rate has continued to rise steadily from less than 0.1% in 1987, to 5.8% in 2001, with a slight decrease in 2003 to 5.0%. Although the knowledge about HIV and its mode of transmission is widespread, it is however disheartening to note that this did not result into appreciable attitudinal change and behavior modification among Nigerians. Both HIV-1 and HIV-2 have been identified in Nigeria, with HIV-1 being the predominant type. Furthermore, several subtypes like subtypes A, B, C, G and J have been...

We survey and evaluate selected participatory tools that have been proven effective in natural resources management and research during our extensive experience with forest communities. We first establish a framework for our analysis by identifying a set of criteria for evaluating each tool. Next we provide a brief description of each tool, followed by an evaluation and comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of all the tools examined and how well they can be adapted to diverse contexts. We also provide suggestions for avoiding common pitfalls. Our findings suggest that most tools are flexible enough to be adapted to a range of applications, and that results are more robust when tools are used in concert. Practitioners should not be disturbed when...

Agricultural Decision Analysis: The Causal Challenge AgEcon
Parton, Kevin A..
The paper sets out the agenda for reviewing models of decision making in the context of farmers’ use of seasonal climate forecasting. Such forecasts have been framed in terms of shifts in cumulative distribution functions of yields or gross margins. Typically they have been applied to choices about crop variety, crop type, time of planting or level of fertiliser application. Fundamental questions are: how do farmers conceptualise and make use of the information contained in seasonal climate forecasts? Do our models of decision making represent well the way in which these decisions are made?

Climatic records over the past 30 ka from temperate Australia - a synthesis from the Oz-INTIMATE workgroup ArchiMer
Petherick, L.; Bostock, H.; Cohen, T. J.; Fitzsimmons, K.; Tibby, J.; Fletcher, M. -s.; Moss, P.; Reeves, J.; Mooney, S.; Barrows, T.; Kemp, J.; Jansen, J.; Nanson, G.; Dosseto, A..
Temperate Australia sits between the heat engine of the tropics and the cold Southern Ocean, encompassing a range of rainfall regimes and falling under the influence of different climatic drivers. Despite this heterogeneity, broad-scale trends in climatic and environmental change are evident over the past 30 ka. During the early glacial period (similar to 30-22 ka) and the Last Glacial Maximum (similar to 22-18 ka), climate was relatively cool across the entire temperate zone and there was an expansion of grasslands and increased fluvial activity in regionally important Murray Darling Basin. The temperate region at this time appears to be dominated by expanded sea ice in the Southern Ocean forcing a northerly shift in the position of the oceanic fronts and...

Date and their processing byproducts as substrates for bioactive compounds production BABT
Tang,Zhen-Xing; Shi,Lu-E; Aleid,Salah Mohammed.
Date is the most popular fruit in middle-east countries. However, the date production process is accompanied by a substantial increase of loss during picking, storage, commercialization and conditioning process. Date and their byproducts have many essential elements for the growth of microorganisms. Thus, they can be converted into value-added compounds through biotechnology. In this paper, date and their processing byproducts used as substrates for producing value-added products such as organic acids, exopolysaccharide, antibiotics, date flavored probiotic fermented dairy, bakery yeast, etc, were reviewed.

Description of a new genus for Cyrtorhina balabacensis Serène, 1971,with notes on the Cyrtorhininae (Decapoda, Brachyura, Raninidae) ArchiMer
Ng, Peter K. L.; Guinot, Danièle.
The raninid genus Cyrtorhina Monod, 1956, is revised and restricted to Cyrtorhina granulosa Monod, 1956, from West Africa. A new genus, Flaberhina, is established for C. balabacensis Serène, 1971 from the Philippines and New Caledonia. Despite their superficial similarities, the two genera can easily be separated by the structures of the carapace, eye, antenna, pterygostome, thoracic sternum, pleon and penis. The taxonomy of the subfamily Cyrtorhininae Guinot & Ng, 2020, which contains both fossil and extant taxa, is also reviewed.

Diagnosis, antiretroviral therapy, and emergence of resistance to antiretroviral agents in HIV-2 infection: a review BJID
Hightower,Maia; Kallas,Esper Georges.
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and type 2 (HIV-2) are the causative agents of AIDS. HIV-2 is prevalent at moderate to high rates in West African countries, such as Senegal, Guinea, Gambia, and Cape Verde. Diagnosis of HIV-2 is made with a positive HIV-1/HIV-2 ELISA or simple/rapid assay, followed by one or two confirmatory tests specific for HIV-2. Following CD4+ T cell counts, HIV-2 viral burden and clinical signs and symptoms of immunodeficiency are beneficial in monitoring HIV-2 disease progression. Although non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors are ineffective in treating HIV-2, nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors can be effective in dual and triple antiretroviral regimens. Their use can decrease...

Do what I say, not what I do: Are we linking research and decision-making about invasive species in Patagonia? Ecología austral
Anderson,Christopher D; Valenzuela,Alejandro E. J.
Invasion biology is well-positioned epistemologically, theoretically and practically to address the challenge of being both scientifically and socially relevant. Yet, how well are we achieving these two dimensions of academic inquiry and impact? We explored this issue by a) surveying Argentine invasion biology practitioners (students, scientists and managers) to determine the types of collaborations they report and their stated preferences regarding research thematic priorities (autecology, impacts, management, patterns/distribution, presence/absence, processes/mechanisms, policy, social), and b) reviewing the invasion biology literature in Argentine Patagonia to establish research productivity, the publications' taxonomic, methodological (review,...

Donovanosis BJID
Velho,Paulo Eduardo Neves Ferreira; Souza,Elemir Macedo de; Belda Junior,Walter.
Donovanosis is a chronic bacterial illness frequently associated with sexually transmitted infections (STI) and is under diagnosed both in endemic areas as well as in countries in which doctors have little experience with tropical diseases. The utilization of syndromic diagnosis and treatment of STIs in various parts of the world and the previous use of antibiotics make it difficult to find Donovan bodies in the cytodiagnostic and hystopathological exams, requiring the utilization of technology that is neither routine nor often accessible to confirm the hypothesized diagnosis. Therefore, it is necessary to bring medical professionals up to date about this infectious disease.

ECOLOGICAL BIOGEOGRAPHY: A REVIEW WITH EMPHASIS ON CONSERVATION AND THE NEUTRAL MODEL BIOGEOGRAFIA ECOLOGICA: REVISION CON ENFASIS EN CONSERVACION Y EL "MODELO NEUTRAL" Gayana
Monge-Nájera,Julián.
Ecological biogeography studies the factors that define the spatial distribution of species in the present time. This review summarises recent contributions on ecological biogeography. Most recent articles report environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and salinity as key elements in the ecological biogeography of many species (followed by other organisms and genetic characteristics). Molecular data indicate that some "unexplainable" ranges are artifacts caused by taxonomic misidentification (several species erroneously classified as a single species). Island biogeography theory is often adequate for conservation management, and the new neutral model of ecological biogeography does not fit all species on which it has been tested. Global warming...

GBV-C/HGV and HIV-1 coinfection BJID
Maidana,Maria Teresa; Sabino,Ester Cerdeira; Kallas,Esper Georges.
An interesting interaction pattern has been found between HIV-1 and GBV-C/HGV, resulting in protection against progression to AIDS. The mechanisms involved in this interaction remain to be clarified. We examined the current knowledge concerning this coinfection and developed hypotheses to explain its effects. A better understanding of this interaction could result in new concepts, which may lead to new strategies to control HIV-1 replication and progression to AIDS.

Genetic resources of vegetable crops: a survey in the Brazilian germplasm collections pictured through papers published in the journals of the Brazilian Society for Horticultural Science Horticultura Brasileira
Sudré,Cláudia P; Leonardecz,Eduardo; Rodrigues,Rosana; Amaral Júnior,Antônio T do; Moura,Maria da CL; Gonçalves,Leandro SA.
The research on plant genetic resources is essential for the conservation of genetic diversity and accessions' divergence studies, as a basis for plant breeding. Aiming to know the state of art in this subject, a historical survey was carried out in Revista de Olericultura and in Horticultura Brasileira, from 1961 to 2006, searching for papers dealing with vegetable crops genetic resources. In each of the papers, the species studied, first author institution, publication year, applied software, number of accessions and descriptors, and the multivariate techniques used were registered. Based on these characteristics, papers were grouped using multivariate analysis. Sixty-one papers dealt somehow with genetic resources in the time covered by the survey, from...
